I PLAN TO GET MARRIED NEXT MONTH. WHAT DO I NEED TO KEEP IN MIND FOR MY TROUSSEAU?
    —Kritika, Kolkata

NACHIKET: Utility, practicality and a dash of romance and fantasy make up a good trousseau! Don’t get carried away by buying tons of saris if you do not wear them regularly. Keep in mind the important occasions in the first year of marriage, the holidays that you have planned as well as your honeymoon. Buy clothes that are beautiful and classic. Spend smartly, and you will have a great collection of textiles, embroideries, prints and accessories that will work well over a period of time.

WHILE I AM A SIZE MEDIUM, I CAN’T EVER SEEM TO LOSE WEIGHT ON MY HIPS. WHAT KIND OF CLOTHES ARE BEST SUITED FOR MY BODY TYPE?
    —Sunita, New Delhi

NACHIKET: Welcome to the reality of most Indian women! No matter what fashion magazines will tell you, the pear shape is most common amongst Indian women. However, it’s vital to focus on what works for your body. Focus on your best features. For tops and tunics, wear
lengths that skim just below the hips. Bias-cut dresses, dresses with fitted empire waists and pleats as well as draped silhouettes work well. Avoid anything that’s too tight or body contouring or has an exaggerated shoulder, as it will make you look bulky. Layering also is a great way to add the illusion of leanness. A strong coloured bias-cut dress worn with a transparent long shrug works well, as does a full length maxi dress that falls beautifully from the bust. It’s a flowy silhouette that works on most women.
