Off beat screenings

In an effort to keep independent cinema alive and offer alternates to Hollywood or Bollywood screenings, NCPA holds a monthly film screening. On offer next week, are two interesting films. The first, The Saroj Khan Story, directed by Nidhi Tuli, in English and Hindi, traces the tale of one of the most renowned choreographers in Bollywood, Saroj Khan. This is a personal story of Saroj, from her humble beginnings to the fame she currently enjoys. Included in the film are clips from her earlier hit dance numbers like Dola Re Dola, and her trials to reach where she has. Also showing is the Gujarati hit Kevi Rite Jaish, directed by Abhishek Jain, which features the Patel community’s obsession with America. The story shows how one family persistently tries to immigrate to the US.

Giving critically acclaimed performance is not the only thing that actor Yami Gautam boasts of.

Taste this!

Giving critically acclaimed performance is not the only thing that actor Yami Gautam boasts of. The actor, who is also a closet chef believes that she has a very sharp sense of taste, almost matching that of a food connoisseur! Though a Punjabi, Yami is not really a foodie but her taste buds are pretty good. She has the talent of identifying all the ingredients in a dish by just tasting it. She says, “I enjoy cooking specially Kadhai Chicken. Whenever I get a chance, I make sure I cook something. But my sense of taste is pretty strong. Eight out of 10 times, I have guessed the ingredients right. I actually want this to happen with my selection of films too!”

Another sweet beginning for Aamir!

Another sweet beginning for Aamir!

While the trailer of Talaash will be shown alongside Heroine, the filmmakers have apparently now also decided to attach the trailer alongside Barfi!, which will hit the theatre this week. Sources say that there’s so much buzz about all the films, that the move will be a treat for all cinema buffs. Talaash that stars Aamir Khan with Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukherji sees the actor return to the big screen after almost two years, as his last full-fledged role was in 2010’s Dhobi Ghat, followed by a cameo in last year’s Delhi Belly. “The thriller is said to be one of the most-awaited films this year and keeping that in mind, we will attach its trailers to multiple films,” says an insider. Meanwhile, Aamir, who is currently in the US shooting for Dhoom 3 is likely to return home in time for the promotions of the film some time in October end.

Hollywood actor Karl Urban who will be seen playing Judge Dredd in the 3D flick based on the iconic comic series Judge Dredd

Dreading the Dredd suit!
Hollywood actor Karl Urban who will be seen playing Judge Dredd in the 3D flick based on the iconic comic series Judge Dredd has revealed that as much as he enjoyed the film, getting into the character was nothing less than strenuous. Directed by Pete Travis, the film has the Star Trek actor play the all-powerful judge, juror and executioner, a role that was earlier played on screen by action star Sylvester Stallone. So, not only did Karl have to undergo intense preparations and train extremely hard to become fit for the role that is packed with action sequences, but he also had no idea of how tough it would be to portray the character with his face covered at all times with the helmet. ‘’I don’t think I was quite prepared for how demanding it was. To take away the eyes — such a vital and valuable tool for an actor — forces you to use your body language and voice. I actually got into that suit a couple of weeks before we started filming just so I could get used to moving around in it, but it wasn’t easy for sure,” says Karl. The film also stars Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey (Game of Thrones).
