Gymnast Dipa Karmakar

NATIONAL GAMES - Dipa sizzles with high-five

Gold Rush Continues For Tripura Gymnast
Commonwealth Games bronze medallist gymnast Dipa Karmakar was the showstopper on Friday finishing with a total of five gold medals for Tripura as Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) continued their domination in the overall standings on Day Six of competitions in the 35th National Games here. SSCB broke away from the neck-and-neck competition being offered by Haryana to top the medals tally with 36 gold, 11 silver and 12 bronze for a total of 61. Maharashtra were second with 25 gold, 29 silver and 12 bronze (74). Dipa, who won a historic bronze at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in the vaulting table, didn't have any problem in annexing the floor exercise gold as she won the gold with ease. It was her second gold of the day after triumphing in the balancing beam. Dipa, who also came fourth in the Incheon Asaid, began her medal haul here winning the allround title and she followed up with two more gold medals on Thursday, winning the vault and un even bars. She amassed 52.100 points in all.
The overall individual silver was won by Pranti Nayak (47.600), whose participation for Madhya Pradesh has the Bengal Olympic Association up in arms, claiming that the gymnast's registration and training were conducted in the eastern state. Bengal's Pranati Das (43.000) settled for bronze. Silver-medallist and Asian Games bronze-medal list Ashish Kumar ended his campaign with a silver (parallel bars) and a bronze (table vault), braving a heel injury through the competition.
In archery, Olympian Deepika Kumari reached the semifinals of the women's recurve individual event getting past Jharkhand teammate Rimil Buriuly 7-3. She was joined by statemate Laxmi Rani Majhi along with Seema Verma of Punjab and Satbir Kaur of Assam. However, in the men's section, another Olympian Jayanta Talukdar crashed out of the individual event by losing to statement Babulal Marandi of Jharkhand 6-4. Tarundeep Rai, another Olympian from Servic es, didn't face any hiccups as he thrashed Asaam's Dhaniram Basumatary 7-3 to make the last four.
Services' shooters were on target in both the team and individual competitions of the men's 50m rifle 3 position event. The trio of Surendra Singh Rathod, Satyendra Singh and Chain Singh Manhas totalled 3492 to finish on top, well ahead of Haryana (Sanjeev Rajput, Mahesh Kumar and Deepak Kumar), who shot a score of 3431.

Boxing off to acrimonious start:
Despite Boxing India's threat of a ban, 127 men and 55 women from 27 state units and the Services Sports Control Board registered for the event. However, much to their shock, the organisers decided to conduct the event under the old pattern of scoring due to the absence of the new software, leading to protests from teams who demanded that boxers be allowed to wear headguards if every scoring punch was to fetch points as per the old norms.

I need to buy a new laptop for under Rs.25,000

I need to buy a new laptop for under Rs.25,000. What can I expect to get within this strict budget?

Laptops available under `25,000 are equipped to handle basic computing tasks like internet browsing, social networking, e-mailing, office productivity (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint), for watching HD (and sometimes Full HD) videos and listening to music. Now, if you are looking for... PORTABILITY, opt for laptops that front a smaller (11.6inch, 1366x768px) display and are kitted with flash memory instead of a high-capacity hard drive. While this puts a limitation on the how much software you can install, you get a more responsive system with faster boot and wake times. You also get a microSD card slot to augment storage and free cloud storage subscriptions that are offered with these laptops. Moreover, machines that are built for portability are incredibly light with excellent battery life of over seven hours of basic usage on a single charge. Here, you can consider the ASUS EeeBook X205 (`14,999), which weighs just under a kilogram, is powered by a 1.33GHz quad-core Intel Atom processor, has 2GB RAM and comes with 32GB eMMC memory. You also get free 500GB ASUS WebStorage space for two years.
If you need connectivity on the move, then buy the “3G-enabled“ HP Stream 11-d023tu (`19,990), which comes with a SIM slot. This 1.27kg laptop is powered by a 2.16GHz dual-core Intel Celeron processor and includes a memory card reader. You also get a year's subscription to Office 365 Personal and 1TB of OneDrive cloud space.
For STORAGE, you can look at the Lenovo G50-30 (80G0015GIN) (`25,620) or the HP Notebook 15-r119tu (`24,490). Both laptops sport a 15.6-inch HD display, are powered by a 2.16GHz Intel Pentium quad-core processor, 4GB RAM and come with a DVD-RW optical drive. The Lenovo is equipped with a 1TB hard drive while the HP machine has a 500GB one.
All the machines listed here come with a licensed copy of the Windows 8 operating system, and they're ready to use straight out of the box.
Before you make a buying decision, check these different devices for build quality, screen for viewing angles and visibility in bright light, speakers for audio, and keyboard for typing comfort.Note: Inquire about buy back schemes for an old laptop. For example, HP has a buy back program on its website where you can get an approximate estimate for branded, working nonworking laptops.

SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE EDGE - XIAOMI MI4 - VIVO X5MAX & OPPO R5 - GOOGLE NEXUS 6

ALL FLAGSHIPS

If you're in the market for a high-end device from the newer batch of smartphones, or perhaps, even looking for an upgrade, there's no escaping these five handsets. Each of these is capable of running demanding apps, can handle all productivity tasks (e-mails, instant messaging, word processing, spreadsheets and presentations), boast of sterling photo and video output, is more than capable of playing most hi-def formats of movies and music straight out of the box and also support direct reading from and writing to OTG USB pen drives. The choice ultimately comes down to your budget, the size of the screen you prefer, and the pre-packaged features that each of these flagships brings to the table...

SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE EDGE
Samsung still has the best support for stylus. The S Pen, when coupled with its Action Memo widget, lets you jot down notes, to-do lists, e-mails, etc in your handwriting and then, even converts it into typed text. You can also use the S Pen with the S Note app to draw, sketch, and annotate maps, photos and graphics.
The Note still retains its split screen feature that lets you view and work with two apps simultaneously . For instance, you can check your e-mails, while also referring to your S Planner calendar app. Additionally, fitness-conscious folk might want to consider this device for its S Health app that uses hardware sensors to record physical activity, heart rate and blood oxygen levels. This app even keeps track of calorie intake, weight, sleep patterns and more. What you also get is an IR blaster, along with the Smart Remote app, that can be configured to be used along with your TV . The biggest novelty of this handset, however, is that its display curves over the right edge of this device. This Edge displays a quick-launch bar for access to contacts, camera, e-mail, browser and S Health. Swipe and you get quick access to widgets for a stopwatch, torch, a 10-cm measure scale and voice recorder. And you can download extra display tools for Twitter feeds, sports scores, the news, and more.

XIAOMI MI4
A stainless-steel frame, combined with a white body and an almost identical size make it look like an iPhone clone. But that's where the similarity ends. The Xiaomi Mi4 runs on MIUI 6, a custom interface based on Android KitKat and thankfully , without any bloatware pre-installed. It comes with a call-recording function, and you also get an IR blaster that can be used to control a range of home appliances such as TVs, ACs and DVD players, with sup port for more devices coming soon via updates.
This handset scores over the older Mi3 with its clearer call quality, and also a screen that's, sharper and more vibrant to look at, on a par with much more expensive devices. In fact, in processor benchmarks that we ran, this device consistently scored higher than the Vivo and Oppo handsets, notching up scores only slightly lower than the Note Edge that retails at thrice as much.
The only perceivable chink in its armour is its lack of expandable memory , so buyers are stuck with just 16GB internal storage.SPECS: 5-inch (1920x1080px) IPS, Gorilla Glass 3 with OGS | 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 quad-core | 3GB RAM | 13MP (LED), 8MP | 16GB (internal storage) | 3080mAh Li-po

VIVO X5MAX & OPPO R5
The Vivo X5Max and Oppo R5 look alike, are super slim at 4.75mm and 4.85mm respectively; share almost identical hardware, and even perform identically , except that the former is a tad bit larger.
Both handsets come with their own customized Android user interface that includes pre-loaded utilities for office productivity , security, the ability to record calls, configurable gestures, and power management features.
The R5, however, lacks a standard audio jack. Instead, you have to use Oppo's earphones along with a microUSB-to-stereo adapter. This is inconvenient when you need to charge the phone at the same time. The Vivo, on the other hand, includes a dual SIM tray in which the second slot can also be used to read a microSD card. Despite how compact these phones are, we did not find any overheating issues. That said, both devices give you a little less than a day of use on a full charge. Here, Oppo's fast charger saves the day for the R5 by replenishing the battery to over 70% in half an hour.
It should be noted that although both handsets are capable of all smartphone tasks, they scored lower than the lesser-priced Mi4 in benchmark tests, and this could be the slight difference when it comes to running extremely demanding apps.

GOOGLE NEXUS 6
The Google Nexus 6, with its phablet-like form factor, is the largest of the devices on test here. And unlike the other flag ship phones, it runs the latest version of Android, called Lollipop. What you get is a combination of a spiffy user interface with hardware that's powerful enough to take on almost any applica tion and game. In fact, this device posted the highest scores in synthetic benchmark tests. Indeed, the Nexus 6 is one of the most powerful handsets in the market today. Its camera is a significant improvement over the one found in the Nexus 5, boasting of sharper captures and neutral colours. On the flip side, it lacks shooting modes, which smartphones with a custom interface have. The Nexus 6 is also equipped with an “ Ambient Display“ feature that activates a small part of the screen to display important updates as soon as you lift the phone or whenever you receive any notification.
Despite the phone's super high-res display , the Nexus 6 battery gives you a day's worth of basic usage. And when combined with its new battery saver feature, you will be able eke out a few hours more. SPECS: 5.6-inch (2560x1440px) Super AMOLED, Gorilla Glass 3 | 2.7GHz Snapdragon 805 quad-core | 3GB RAM | 16MP (LED), 3.7MP | 32GB (internal storage), microSD (up to 64GB) | 3000mAh Li-ion VIVO SPECS: 5.5-inch (1920x1080px) Super AMOLED | 1.5GHz ARM Cortex-A53 octa-core | 2GB RAM | 13MP (LED), 5MP | 16GB (internal storage), microSD (via second SIM slot) | 2000mAh Li-po OPPO SPECS: 5.2-inch (1920x1080px) AMOLED, Gorilla Glass 3 | 1.5GHz ARM Cortex-A53 octa-core | 2GB RAM | 13MP (LED), 5MP | 16GB (internal storage) | 2000mAh Li-po SPECS: 5.96-inch (2560x1440px) AMOLED, Gorilla Glass 3 | 2.7GHz Snapdragon 805 quad-core | 3GB RAM | 13MP (LED), 2MP | 32GB (internal storage) | 3220mAh Li-po

Interesting planters for your garden

Interesting planters for your garden

Having a garden once meant large open spaces in the front or backyard of bungalows, or on terraces of independent row houses. However, now, with apartments being the order of the day, gardens are restricted to balconies, corners and shelves inside apartments. Bonsai may seem an ideal option, but it's no fun to restrict anything living, including plants. There's no need to be discouraged though as we give you simple ideas that you could use to make your little space green in a creative manner.

TIN CANS Today, with consumerism on the rise, tin containers have made their way into homes,b ei ti nt hef ormo ft eac onta iners or aerated drink cans. However, once empty, d espiteb ei ngs turdy, th ese canse n du pi nt het ras h.I nsteado f throwing these away, you could use them in your garden. Use a blade to cut thet opo ff fore asyp lanting. Then, paint the can in colours of your choice. Once the paintd ries,y ouc anp lanth erbs such as pa rsley, basil ,r osemarya nd mint, among others, and probably even paint the name of the herb on the can.

BOTTLES No matter how much you try,i tis almost impossible to avoid accumulating bottles. A nice way to put them to use is by turning them into pots .While wide-mouthed glass bottles make for pretty plant holders, plastic ones are equally good. Place the plastic bottle horizontally and cut out a small rectangular area to allow your plant to grow.Tie the ends of your bottle with a rope and hang it from the balcony. You could also sliceits base, hang them upside down and use them as pots .

TYRES If you want to be a little more creative, use a no ldc artyrea sap ot.If you dont like the black rubber conatiner in your garden, just pa intt he tyret om akei tl ooks prigh tlya n d colourful. MUGS Have too many mugs and cups a t home and are clueless about what to do with them? Just use them as pots for your plants. Since mugs, simply put, are smaller containers, you can plant different kinds of cactiin them. This way, they will be easy to maintain and can be kept indoors. And if you are struggling with an abundance of small er tea cups, you could use them as pots too. Plant herbs in them and place them on your kitchen window sill. This way, you could use home-grown herbs in your food preparations .

BOXES Shoe boxes, takeaway boxes, jute boxes, chocolate tin boxes and gift boxes are generally available at home.Use these as pots and place them in your balcony. You could paint them in the colours of your choice to ensure that they fit your garden ambience. Since most of the other containers are bests uitedf orl eafyplants, you could use boxes for flowering ones. The drawback, though, is that boxes are best utilized when they are kept in balconies. They don t look good indoors.

WOKS AND BOWLS Most kitchenware is sui , table to pot plants however, the-best looking container among them has to be the wok. You could use your old woks as pots and hang them in your balcony.W oks have handles, which allows you to tie a rope on either side. This way, you can hang them easily on a railing or hook. You could also turn your larger woks into fish bowls and grow water-friendly plants, such as money plant.

Here is how you sport a stylish hat for girls

Here is how you sport a stylish hat

With the horse riding, racing and derby season on, here are a few tips you need to keep in mind when wearing a hat. You could opt for one that is simple or grandiose, custom-made or off the rack, but just make sure to sport one when you are at the races.
 CHOOSE COMFORT OVER FASHION
Hats are meant to make you feel fabulous and stylish, and also comfortable. You should choose one that makes you feel that way. With the perfect hat on, you are always a winner. So what if the horse you bet on lost the race?

OPT FOR ONE THAT HAS THE PERFECT FIT
Your hat should fit you perfectly. If it needs to be adjusted all day long, then you are not doing it right. There are sizers or padded bands available that can be placed inside the rim of the hat to make it sit on your head without moving much. You could use hat pins too, to fix it in place.

WEAR THEM RIGHT
An inch or two above your ears is the perfect place for your hat to sit. Remember not to place them too far back on your head. Unlike men, who are expected to remove their hats indoors, women are permitted to wear their extravagant headpieces throughout the derby festivities. But if you are in a crowded space with a wide brim hat, remember your manners and do be mindful of your neighbours.

What's on your man's mind when he's in bed with you?

What's on your man's mind when he's in bed with you?

Several surveys reveal that women spend a minimum of two hours getting ready, preening in front of the mirror and putting on their best before stripping down on bed. But what goes on in your man's mind when he's holding you closer? Do your flaws bother him? Or is he so into you that he doesn't even notice them? Here are few things that most men agree to noticing in a woman, and four things they swear they don't pay attention to, while indulging in some action between the sheets. WHAT HE DOESN'T CARE FOR:
SCAR, STRETCH MARK OR CELLULITE
Men don't want you to look for cover or make the room dark just so you can cover up a scar or hide a stretch mark. Also, they don't mind if you have a little flab or wobbly belly because many like to hold on to some flesh as well. Sahil Sankalp, a fashion photographer, says, “Every time I see the stretch mark on my wife's belly , I'm reminded of the pain she endured to bring a new life on earth. It's a sign of her strength, her endurance.I'm proud of the fact that she didn't opt for a tummy tuck or other procedures to get rid of the scar of childbirth. And I tell her the same.“
MANICUREPEDICURE MAKEUP
Honestly , none of those will even register on your guy's mind when the primary focus is on action between the sheets.Rachna Manik, an entrepreneur, says, “My husband has zero idea about what purpose manicures and pedicures serve. He can't even say if I wear my expensive matte makeup which I bought in London. He prefers it if I just wash my face and apply a little moisturiser before snuggling up to him. Sometimes, I think investing in makeup is a sheer waste.“
FANCY LINGERIE
Frilly, seamless, wired, padded, push up, single piece, colour coordinated.Who cares? Especially when the idea is to strip out of every piece of clothing?
BODY HAIR AND MORNING BREATH
So what if your legs are not freshly waxed or your underarm still has some stubble? Even men don't trim their beard or get rid of chest hair always.Says Sahil, “As long as it doesn't get in the way , men don't really notice when was the last time you poured some hot wax on yourself. Of course, we do appreciate it when you take the time and pain to clean up. It's an indication you want the romp as much as we do.But, having stubble on the body is not a crime.“ And morning breath? He has it. So do you. Why make a fuss for a little snuggle and a peck after waking up just because of that smell. Get set for round two, we say!
WHAT HE CARES FOR:
EYES
No, it's not the eyebrows or the lined lashes that he's interested in. It's the expression in your eyes that keeps a man going. Dr Kunal Kulkarni, andrologist, says, “Zoning out in the middle of the action shows how much you are into the act of lovemaking. Instead of looking right through him or staring at the bedpost, lock eyes with him. Keeping your eyes shut is also a sign that you are enjoying the action.“
HANDS
Men see where your hands are when getting intimate. Holding the pillow is fine, but wellness expert Priyanka C says that tracing your fingers along his body contour might just get him excited. She says, “Digging your nails into his skin, holding his back, hugging... these are sure signals of how much you are involved. And these little things matter to them.“
INITIATIVE, INNOVATION AND EAGERNESS
Your man will obviously be excited if you teach him a trick or two in the bedroom. Dr Kulkarni says, “Men would be worried if their wives girlfriends just lie on their back and let them do all the work. Also, it makes them wonder if something's wrong. A little bit of initiative and enthusiasm is something that every man craves for. There are more than a few hundred positions that one can try out. No man has ever said no to learning on the bed.“
BREATH
Nope again, we are not referring to the smell, but the breathing pattern. The way you breathe, the way you speak and whisper, the way you moan and scream -your man cares for these.

SIMPLE WAYS TO SAVE PAPER

SIMPLE WAYS TO SAVE PAPER

Saving the environment doesn't have to be a herculean task that is left to big organisations. We can all do our bit to help out. Here's how... 1
Most of us use debitcredit cards while shopping, but how many of us actually need the printed receipt, given that banks instantly send a SMS after each transaction? The next time you swipe your card, ask the vendor to print only one (merchant) copy of the receipt.
2
The same rule applies when drawing money from an ATM. All ATM machines ask users if they want a print of the transaction. Opt to go paperless and just check your phone the next time you want to know how much balance you have left.
3
Print something only if you really need to. These days, you can flash your eticket on your mobile phone at the airport and railway station. Also, use the blank side of a printed paper to jot down any notes that you might have.
4
When you do need to print, you can save a lot of paper by simply changing the margin settings. Change the margin from the standard 1.25 setting to .75 on every document you print.
5
Don't throw away the envelope the next time you get a letter or bill. Pile them up next to your landline or computer to jot down phone numbers or notes.
6
Feed your grocery or to do list on your mobile phone instead of scribbling it on a piece of paper.Since your phone is with you at all times, you will have your list handy whenever you need it.
7
Instead of going out and buying a book, gather used paper (paper that has been printedwritten on one side) or pamphlets to make a booklet. You could make it look funky by choosing a colourful cover.
8
Get creative and cut pages of magazines into different shapes to make a unique piece of art. You could cut them up like leaves and paste them on a used sheet of paper or chartpaper to make it look like a tree.
9
Use old newspaper as gift wrapping paper. This gives your gift a funky look and makes it stand out.
10
Use cloth napkins instead of tissue paper at home.Cloth absorbs liquid better and does a neater job of cleaning up the mess. Moreover, it can always be washed and reused.

World's cutest office employs nine adorably ambitious cats

World's cutest office employs nine adorably ambitious cats

Who needs a cat café when you've got moggies in the workplace?
In the olden days, lazy Royal Navy sailors could expect a lashing with the cat o'nine tails if their work wasn't up to scratch. But one Japanese firm has discovered that nine real felines are a far better motivational tool than the threat of a good flogging. An internet solutions business company has employed a squad of super-cute cats that are free to roam around the office. Since the moggies moved in, stress levels in the company have plummeted and the team is much more productive than before. Staff have bonded over the furballs, dropping their barriers and boosting team spirit as they collectively rush to cuddle their cutesy co-workers. It's not all good news though, because cats don't obey the same rules as humans. They pull out plugs, chew away on internet cables, claw the walls and even fall asleep inside visitor's bags. The staff don't care about infractions of these cheeky vandals, because they have all been clobbered with a potentially toxic dose of cuteness. The team at the company are even paid to play with cats, which makes them very different from the customers who flock to cat cafés. Employees are paid a 5,000 yen (£28) “cat bonus“ every month if they adopt a cat in need. They are also given time off if their cat dies, with pet bereavement treated the same way as if a human had died.
In Britain, famous workplace cat includes Larry , who works as chief mouser at the Cabinet Office. Sadly , Larry is anything but happy living his home at Westminster. David Cameron doesn't agree with the Japanese policy on office pets and has banned the ministerial moggie from Number 10.
And if that's not a vote winner for the other parties, we don't know what is.

Several pet owners have discovered the use of supplements with the help of research and vets

Supplements required for your pooch

Several pet owners have discovered the use of supplements with the help of research and vets. And, just like humans, animals too benefit from them in many ways

WHY IS IT NECESSARY?
It is imperative to provide pets with necessary supplements so they can stay hale and hearty . If your pet has been not been receiving a balanced healthy meal or is dealing with certain ailments, it is wise to add supplements to hisher diet. Says Dr Manisha Karn, a veterinary physician, “A supplement like fish oil is good for animals because it contains fatty acids, which is helpful for skin disorders. It is also necessary because many pets suffer from digestive disorders and supplements help them combat that to a great extent.“ However, you need to ensure that if your pet has been prescribed a certain diet by the vet, it means the necessary supplements have already been added to the food. But if you think your pet shows signs of weakness, supplements could be a great option.

THREE IMPORTANT SUPPLEMENTS FOR PETS

1. Enzymes Most pets may not get the correct diet.
In such cases, it is necessary to provide them with enzymes that aid in digestion. Enzymes help in breaking down the food before it reaches the intes tinal tract. They are highly useful if your dog suf fers from liver ailments, pancreatitis, or is other wise unhealthy and may benefit from getting additional nutritional value from their food. One must note that while digestive enzymes are help ful for some dogs, they can cause an upset stom ach in some.

2. Probiotics Pets often suffer from bowel issues.
Hence, they require a vet's care. Besides that, a pet needs probiotics because they help in immunity , support digestion and also aid metabolism. This is a great way to keep your dog healthy and you can save on vet bills. Kefir, which is rather easy to be prepared, is a great source of beneficial bacteria for pets. Plain yogurt can also be useful. If you provide probiotics while giving them antibiotics, it will help in preventing diarrhea.

3. Fish oil This is highly necessary for joint, heart, stress and immune support. Moreover, it helps keeping the pet's coat soft and healthy. It also helps fight dry, scaly skin, and it's a known anti-inflam matory . Omega-3 EFAs are found primarily in fish oil, which is known to help the brain development of puppies and small dogs.
