We love wearing clothes that flatter our body but often overlook the hazards that they cause us

Safety over style

We love wearing clothes that flatter our body but often overlook the hazards that they cause us. Read on to know about how clothes and accessories aggravate dermal disasters

From tight lingerie to cheap fabrics to costume jewellery fashion is taking a toll , on our skin in several ways. Derma tologists informed us how squeez ing into suffo cating clothing can result in potential health risks. Tight cloth ing such as body-sha pers and corsets, in addition to making your bulging paunch look ripped from the outside can also be irritable to the nerves.

Elastic around the waist is one of the major causes of urticaria, a kind of dermatitis that results in redness of the skin, rashes and itchy wheals and restrictive circulation resulting in alterations in cerebrovascular reactivity. “Contact urticaria is a common skin problem caused by stretched clothing, lingerie and pieces of clothing worn at the place for a prolonged period such as socks and ties. The pressure exerted by the clothing results in red rashes and bumps. Although urticaria, like any other allergic reaction, depends on one's susceptibility , simple preventive measures can go a long way in combating these. Applying a petroleum jelly around the waist and other pressure points can help,“ suggests dermatologist Dr Anusree Ganguly . Cotton and polyester, unlike nylon, synthetic fabrics and even wool, let the skin breathe and is a safer option for people, especially children with a history of dermatitis.
Costume jewellery , which contains nickel and can cause severe contact dermatitis. Symptoms include itchy rashes around the neck, earlobes and wrists. Although it is difficult to prevent aller gic reactions, it is advisable to opt for metallic jewellery that is devoid of nickel. Cheap, synthetic dyes and fabrics too can cause contact dermatitis and be difficult to diagnose without an allergic patch test (APT). “Humidity acts as a catalyst when it comes to breeding fungal infections and in a country like India, it is important to avoid fabrics that cause too much sweating, thus, resulting in skin problems,“ advises Dr Sumit Sen, Professor of Dermatology at a city hospital. He added that pressure urticaria localized to contact area may also result from wrist watches and belts and must be avoided by people who are prone to such allergies. It is always wiser to choose comfort over fashion.

Misuse of cosmetics is also a reason behind common skin perils. Fairness creams may promise you flawless skin in few weeks but they contain steroids that can cause acne to surface. “Steroid, an active ingredient and a culprit agent in any fairness creams (more common is night creams) can cause adverse reactions on sensitive skin. Oil-based makeup in forms of foundation and concealers can also result in acne.Sometimes makeup or creams react with sunlight and result in facial pigmentation known as photo contact dermatitis,“ Ganguly informed.

TIPS
Avoid skinny jeans that can exert pressure on the spine and thighs Choose cotton over nylon Tight belts, skirts can cause abdominal pain Avoid cosmetics with active fairness agents Avoid tight lingeries

REMIX THE DRAPE

REMIX THE DRAPE

Throw on a gilet, ditch the traditional blouse for a `knotty' shirt, slip into a pair of hot pants or skinny jeans and heels -you're ready to take on the world!

They say , an Indian woman looks best in a sari. And if you want to break free from the monotonous drape, here are five looks that you can achieve by mixing and remixing the sari with other accessories...
BELT IT OUT
A slim belt around the waist will make your waist look slimmer and ensure the pleats and pallu stay in place. For a smarter look, wrap the pallu around the neck instead of throwing it over a shoulder. Avoid over-accessorising it with chunky jewellery and wear minimal makeup.

GILET EDGE
The trendiest twist to sari fashion, a sleeveless acid wash gilet will ensure that you make a quirky statement. Drape the sari like a dhoti -doing away with the pallu entirely. Ditch the blouse for a solid hued tank top or crop top -avoid long sleeves with this style. Add an open front gilet to transform the sari into a high fashion ensemble.

HOT PANTS, HOTTER SARI
Drape a sari around a pair of shorts.Pleat the six yards on one side, retain the pallu and slip into heels. Tanks or noodle-strap blouses will go best with this look or you could opt for a polo neck blouse. Stick to minimal accessories like a bangle or ear cuffs.

TRUSTY OL' SKINNIES
Drape the sari around a pair of skinny jeans or cigarette pants. Choose a lighter fabric, such as crepe or chiffon, and replace the petticoat with jeans. Keep the pallu narrow to flaunt your midriff and arrange the pleats on one side so that the pant can be seen.

THE SHIRT BLOUSE
Drape the sari around the waist like a flared ghagra and pair it with a knotted shirt. Alternatively , you could wear dhoti pants underneath D and show it off with a thigh-high g slit on one side. Opt for minimal d accessories. s

Wristband drone wins wearable devices contest

Wristband drone wins wearable devices contest

Intel Corp on Monday awarded $5,00,000 to a group of do-it-your selfers who developed a wristband that turns into a cameraequipped drone. They won a contest that the chipmaker hopes will help guarantee it a leading position in the emerging market for wearable computing devices. Aimed at rock climbers, the Nixie quadcopter is worn wrapped around the wrist and springs into the air to take pictures from hard-to-reach places. Like a boomerang, it returns to its owner and then syncs with the owner's smartphone. Falling behind Qualcomm in recent years after it was slow to embrace smartphones and tablets, Intel has been keen to make sure its processors are at the front of future technology trends.
CEO Brian Krzanich in January launched the “Make it Wearable“ contest to encourage entrepreneurs and hobbyists to use Intel's chips to develop new kinds of wearable tech nology . The prize money is meant to help the winners bring their prototype to market.“This was an experiment to see what we could do in this space,“ Krzanich said at an award event on Monday . Finalists included a pad that lets premature babies in incubators feel the heartbeat of their mothers, and a necklace that uses patterns of pulses felt on the chest to give cyclists turn-by-turn directions so they don't need to look at their smartphones.

QUICK WAYS TO WEAR A SCARF

QUICK WAYS TO WEAR A SCARF

With winter on the anvil, here are a few tips to don scarves that can help you make a style statement.Place a square scarf over your neck so that both the diagonal ends falls in front and reach your stomach. Use a belt to cinch it at your waist. This look works when you are wearing a tee and jeans.
For a classic look, drape a printed scarf under the lapel of a jacket or blazer.
Drape your scarf loosely around your neck for a breezy feel.
Add colour to a monochromatic outfit by tying a colourful scarf to your bag.
Do a cowboy knot and let your scarf rest on your shoulders.
Tie the waterfall drape for a boho chic look.

3 STYLES CAN TRY YOU
THE BRAIDED KNOT
Gather a long scarf width-wise and fold it in half. Drape it around your neck so that you have a loop on one side and loose ends on the other. Pull the ends through this loop.
Give this loop a twist. This will lock the first end and will create a second loop.
Pull the loose end through this new loop and tighten the braid.

THE WATERFALL DRAPE
Loosely wrap your scarf twice around your neck. Take the right corner and tuck it on the left side.
Now tuck the left end of the scarf underneath the left side.

THE INFINITY SCARF
Tie the ends of a scarf together so you have a large loop. Hang this over your neck so that the knot falls at the back.
Twist the scarf and place it over your head again so that you have two layers.
If your scarf is a long silk one, you could probably make another layer.
Cover the knot at the back with one of the layers to complete the look.

Don’t even have superpowers Heroes that are Baymax, Dory, Russell, Kick-Ass, Wall-E, Oscar, Wreck-It Ralph, Mike Wazowski, Shaun

Who’d have thought it?
Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. And sometimes, they don’t even have superpowers. Here’s looking at the unlikeliest heroes around

Anybody can be a hero. If pop culture has taught us anything, it’s that. They can be found in the unlikeliest, most inconspicuous of places. And when we meet them, they may not know it themselves, but they’ve got the heart of a hero.
Ordinary people, extraordinary circumstances. That’s what forges a hero. Here’s looking at a few heroes we least expected...

Baymax
Marvel releases it’s first animation flick Big Hero 6 this week. But it takes a wide departure, turning kid genius Hiro’s transforming bodyguard robot Baymax into a clumsy, oversized, inflatable Marshmellow Man-like robot, whose primary function is care-giving. So much so, it sees the battle-loving Hiro as it’s patient!
Dory
Is she amnesiac? Does she have an attention-deficit disorder? All of the above? Well, whatever this fish from Finding Nemo and the just-announced Finding Dory had, she was sweet, kind, lovable, cheery and good-hearted. Nothing fazed her, except the part where she didn’t remember stuff, I guess...

Russell
Up’s portly pre-teen, who’s a cub-scout, is looking to earn his next badge is a persistent little kid. The surly old Carl wants to be by himself, but Russell won’t take no for an answer. And when Carl decides to go for an unscheduled trip, he tags along. And somewhere along the way teaches the old man a thing or two about how to live.

Kick-Ass
Everybody may want to put on a cape or a mask and fight criminals and other assorted villains. But is that enough...just the right intentions? Kick-Ass is about that kind of non-powered somebody who wants to clean up his city. But is he up for the task? Or is he going to get his a** handed to him? I think we all know that answer.

Wall-E
The last robot on earth, ironically, is also clinging on whatever little of humanity was left after Earth became a huge garbage bin. This primitive (by the film’s present-day standards) piece of technology still has more heart than those more advanced than him.

Oscar
Nobody takes Oscar seriously. Like seriously. Nobody. But the hero of Shark Tale is shown having a chance meeting with a shark who wants out of the family business (sharks have mobs, too?). They come up with a scheme where the shark plays dead and Oscar claims to have killed him (due to a misunderstanding of course) and nobody bothers to check facts. Like that sounds impossible, right?

Wreck-It Ralph
Ralph didn’t ask to be a villain. As a video game character, he didn’t have much of a say in the matter, really. That’s just a job. A part he plays. But as he grows tired of the routine and being left out of fun activities, he sets off on a hero’s journey to find a place he belongs.

Mike Wazowski
He’s a round, green ball of slime, but Mike from Monsters, Inc wants to be more. So much more. He’s the little guy who puts in that extra effort, that push, but it seemingly never isn’t enough.

Shaun
Almost everybody dislikes Shaun. His stepfather, one of his roommates, and his girlfriend’s best friends... But he couldn’t care less. The hero of Shaun Of The Dead prefers the company of his best buddy Ed and the Winchester, his favourite watering hole. As he gets up one morning to find his world gone to the zombies, he sets out to save those dearest to him from the undead and get them to the Winchester. Just another day?

Trimming nails can lead to serious nail conditions

Trimming nails can lead to serious nail conditions

Daily trimming of fingernails and toenails to make them more aesthetically attractive could be detrimental and potentially lead to serious nail conditions, says a study . Regular poor trimming can tip the fine balance of nails, causing residual stress to occur across the entire nail, said researchers from University of Nottingham. “This residual stress can promote a change in shape or curvature of the nail over time which, in turn, can lead to serious nail conditions,“ said lead researcher Cyril Rauch. For this, the researchers focused specifically on ingrown toe nails. When devising their equations, the researchers accounted for the strong adhesion of nails to their bed through tiny , microscopic structures.
It allows the nail to slide forwards and grow in a `ratchet-like' fashion by continuously binding and unbinding to the nail. By also taking into account the mechanical stresses and energies associated with the nail, they came up with an overall nail shape equation. The equation showed that when the balance between the growth stress and adhesive stress is broken -if a nail grows too quickly or slowly , or the number of adhesive structures changes -a residual stress across the entire nail can occur, causing it to change shape over time.
The equations found that residual stress can occur in any fingernail or toenail; however, the stress is greater for nails that are larger in size and have a flatter edge.
The equations also showed that bad trimming of the nails can amplify the residual stress.
