One of India’s youngest, 16-year-old DJ Shaan Singh, will be playing in the city this Sunday

DJ Shaan Singh is perhaps one of the youngest DJs from India to play at some of the most popular music festivals both in and outside of India. Shaan will be performing at the three-day long Sunburn Festival starting in the city today.
Prod this young DJ on what he has in store for us this Sunday, and he plays down the question, saying, “Well… I want it to be a kind of surprise and not disclose too much.” And it is not just the audience that is kicked about Shaan’s performance; the 16-year-old is pretty excited as well. “I have been preparing for this too,” says an enthusiastic Shaan. “But I would not be revealing the mash-ups that I just finished today,” he quips. Shaan, who normally plays house music, says that one of his favourites is Funkagenda. “Midnight Run remix by Funkagenda is something that I play very often in all my gigs in India and abroad. Let me not say too much…I’ll be secretive and hopefully I will be able to surprise you well,” he adds with a smile.
And who is he most looking forward to watch at the three day fest? “On the first day I’m very excited about watching PleasureKraft play. I am sure it will be a fab show,” he says. Shaan has played at several popular venues in Mumbai and also all across the country. Recently, he even played at a festival in London.
Talking about the electronic and trance music scene in India, he says, “I feel it is slowly building up. People are getting educated about it, slowly, but they are. Mumbai and Bangalore are the cities that I enjoy playing in the most.” He further adds, “In fact, the young college crowd is tuned in well into the electro music. I was performing at this college festival Zodiac, and the crowd there was the best audience I’ve ever had. They were all singing along, following me, cheering, clapping…it was fun!”
Other DJs to look out for in the fest include Fergie, Rohit Barker, Arjun Vagale, Shapeshifters (Saturday); Paul Thomas, Pearl, John Dahlback, Gareth Emery (Sunday).
