WORLD'S MOST UNUSUAL EXHIBIT ARCHIVES

MUMBAI'S SLUM MUSEUM JOINS WORLD'S MOST UNUSUAL EXHIBIT ARCHIVES

The world's first slum museum, which will open next month in Mumbai, is the latest to join the ranks of institutes, which display exhibits that are not only fascinating but also support causes. It will challenge the stereotypes that the West has about underprivileged people, courtesy films like Slumdog Millionaire. The first-of-its-kind, this pop-up museum will be held in a 13 x 6 foot portable caravan and will travel across the city . It will showcase the creations of the locals of Dharavi like leather products and ceramic items etc. Workshops and film screenings will also be held to ensure that people from the community showcase their creativity. Some other museums, which have broken all rules in the book with their eyeball-grabbing exhibits, are:

A RARE COLLECTION OF TOILETS

Name: Sulabh International Museum of Toilets, Delhi Dedicated to: Raising awareness of sanitation and hygiene It traces the historic revolution of commodes over the past 4,500 years. With exhibits from over 50 countries, the items in this museum include privies, chamber pots, decorated Victorian toilet seats, bathroom furniture, bidets and water closets in vogue from 1145 AD till date. Apart from including toilets used by Roman emperors that were made from gold and silver, it also has a rare collection of poems based on them.
What to look out for: A French toilet disguised as a bookcase. Also, a replica of the throne of Louis the XIV, which was inbuilt with a loo. It is believed that the king used to have court sessions while sitting on the pot.

AN EROTIC HOTSPOT

Name: Museum of Sex, New York Dedicated to: History, evolution and cultural significance of human sexuality From the erotic to the outlandish, it houses more than 15,000 sexual artefacts. Strictly for adults, the collection includes vintage vibrators, period photography and Japanese erotic art, etc. Although the exhibits are meant to be educative, they are often displayed in an explicit format. What to look out for: The museum cafe is famous for serving a blend of special `aphrodisiac' cocktails.

IF LOOKS COULD KILL

Name: Museum of Enduring Beauty, Malacca (Malaysia) Dedicated to: Showing different interpretations of beauty across cultures It documents the strangest kind of procedures, the lengths that humans can go to and the agony they can endure to look physically attractive! The exhibits on display highlight corseting, scarification, lip and neck stretching, tribal teeth filling, tattooing and foot binding etc., in short, all kinds of body modifications that people have gone through since ancient times. What to look out for: The exhibit of one of the most famous ladies in history, Ethel Granger, who had a tiny, 13-inch waist, which was barely enough to sup port her spine.

FOR ART GONE AWRY

Name: The Museum of Bad Art, Massachusetts Dedicated to: Celebrating bad artists and their works While most art galleries and museums in the world take pains to curate the best works of artists and sculptors, this one proudly displays the worst of the lot. Housing over 600 pieces, the gallery receives at least 20 artworks a month. But only the worst are chosen.Curators also scour flea markets, thrift stores and garbage cans to find pieces worthy for the museum!

MEMENTOS OF BROKEN HEARTS

Name: Museum of Broken Relationships, Zagreb (Croatia) Dedicated to: People who have a tough time overcoming heartbreak Two Croatian artists came up with this unusual idea after their own break-up.Anyone who has been in love and has been through heartbreak can contribute to this exhibit that has everything from poignant love letters to half-torn photographs of former lovers to beautiful wedding dresses and even a bottle of tears.

THE DEAD ON DISPLAY

Name: Museum of Death, Los Angeles Dedicated to: Taking away the fear of dying Celebrating death, this frightening museum has sections on baby coffins, the artworks of infamous serial killers, suicide machines and taxidermy . There are videos of autopsies, pictures of car accidents and actual crime scenes as well as rooms filled with funeral paraphernalia! The goal is to make people feel grateful that they are alive. What to look out for: You can see the real, guillotined head of the French serial killer, Bluebeard.

How to choose the right clothes for your body type

How to choose the right clothes for your body type

Getting the right clothes for their body type is the tough est choice that women have to make, but with a bit of guidance and a few hints one can have the desired wardrobe. Try these simple tips to customise your wardrobe based on different body shapes:

THE APPLE BODY SHAPE

Usually characterised by rounded shoulders, a full tummy and average size bust. The weight is carried around the middle of the body with slimmer legs.

What works best: Well-tailored tunic tops work well on this shape as it lowlights the rounder tummy; an empire line is also very flattering. Vnecks or round-neck tops work best as they flatter the bust and draw attention away from the tummy area.

You can pair these with a straight leg trouser. Long line jackets are also best for this body shape. Try wearing these with a skirt that sits on the hips and team with a top in a block colour for perfect symmetry Stay away from: Tapered trousers, cowl neck tops, tight knits and short jackets.

FOR PEAR BODY SHAPE

Pear shapes carry weight around the tummy and thighs and are smaller on the shoulders What works best: The trick with pear shape is to balance out the shoulders with the hips by drawing attention to the top part of the body . This can be achieved with wide necklines and interesting prints. As with apple shapes, it’s best to wear block colours on the bottom. Bootleg trousers are great for creating balance or, if you prefer skirts, A-line is the best cut.

Stay away from: Tight knits, pencil skirts, prints or bright colours on the bottom half.

FOR HOURGLASS BODY

Women with hourglass body have smaller waist, larger bust and rounded hips. It's the easiest shape to dress, as most styles will suit this shape. What works best: If you are lucky enough to have an hourglass shape, you can pull off almost any style. To show off your waist wear high-waisted skirts or dresses with large waistbands. Necklines can be quite structured but keep it simple on top as prints can make you look top heavy .Don't hide under baggy tshirts or jumpers but instead wear fitted tops. Well-tailored trousers are great on the hourglass figure; just be aware that your bottom can look bigger in prints. The world is your oyster when it comes to dresses.

Stay away from: Large prints and baggy styles

OR LEAN SHAPE

Lean shapes have a smaller bust and slender hips with a square waist.

What works best: Although a lot of us envy the lean shape it can be tricky to style as its difficult to get the right balance. Creating a waist and a bust is the first action to take. Try high-waisted trousers or belted dresses. Cross over tops and wrap dresses work very well on this shape. If you want to wear it separately, start with a cowl neck top to give your bust a more balanced look and team this with an A-line skirt or bootleg trousers. Layering is also a good way to create more dimensions.

■ Stay away from: Big statement styles and bodycon dresses.

Your high heels could cripple you

Your high heels could cripple you

If you are one of the those who often sets foots out in high heels, you may be at risk for several health complications. According to study by Stanford University, wearing high heels for extended periods of time can cause serious problems like arthritis or even knee replacement surgery.
Wearing heels can dangerously put pressure on knee joints, which wears away body's natural shock absorber, cartilage, increasing the risk of osteoarthritis.Scientists scanned the knees of healthy women as they walked at a normal pace in flat shoes, 1.5inch heels and 3.5inch heels, and found that when women wear high heels, their knees are held in an awkward, bent position causing the joints to perform as though aged or damaged joints would -increasing the risk of osteoarthritis.
Physiotherapists and osteopaths who warned that the shoes could lead to painful back, hip and neck problems, explained that “standing and walking on the balls of your feet throws the skeleton out of its usual, healthy alignment, which means muscles and joints throughout the body have to compensate to maintain its centre of gravity and keep the body upright.“
Those who wear 3inch heels regularly could suffer from an injury to the Achilles tendon called tendonitis.

A hoy , Bohemia! You know you're soaking in the free-spirited, gypsyesque lifestyle when you don't mind being a little artistically messy , be it in your clothing or the way you decorate your home. Bohemians often come across as a bunch of people who might be laidback but possess a distinct creative trait that reflects in whatever they do. With many people now embracing this style of living, being Boho is the new cool. Saher and Tanya, who run an outlet selling products inspired by the far-off land, say , “The best thing about the Bohemian lifestyle is its DIY aspect. We deal in goods that are handcrafted and environment-friendly . Many people in the city shop consciously now, and prefer products that are biodegradable and made from natural materials, such as vegetable dyes and handloom fabrics. The Bohemian culture endorses handmade stuff. From attire, scarves, shoes and ornaments to tapestries and rugs -all come in a kaleidoscope of rustic colours and patterns.“
Meghna Khanna, a proprietor of another boutique that sells quirky handmade stuff taking cues from the Bohemian culture, adds, “We follow happy trends.
