Keeping a beard is sunnat': Muslim cleric Maulana Qari Ishaq Gora reacts to expulsion of 4 students from Darul Uloom Deoband

Saharanpur: Weeks after four students were expelled from Darul Uloom Deoband in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur for shaving their beards, Muslim cleric Maulana Qari Ishaq Gora said that keeping a beard is a 'sunnat' since the holy Prophet Mohammed did the same. Gora is the patron of Jamiat Dawat-ul Muslameen.

The Muslim cleric said that the way Prophet Mohammed spent his life is "sunnat" for Muslims and in the same way keeping a beard is also "sunnat". He further stated that a beard could be trimmed only if it grows beyond the fist length. Gora added that Muslims should follow the lifestyle of Prophet Mohammed.

The Muslim Cleric's statement came almost two weeks after the expulsion of the four students by Darul Uloom Deoband for either shaving the beard completely or trimming it. On Monday, the institute warned the students of immediate expulsion if they trim or shave their beards.

A notice was also issued in this regard. As per the institute, students with no beards will not be considered for admission. According to a report published in The Indian Express, the ousted students tendered an apology.

"In Islam, men are asked to keep their beard to one fist length. It is unlawful to cut it below one fist and shaving it is haram (prohibited) and a major sin," said Maulana Hussain Ahmed, the head of the Education department in Darul Uloom as quoted by the media house. However, it is not known whether the four students have been reinstated.
