BSE, Angel One Shares Drop Up to 6% After Sebi Chief Proposes Longer Equity Derivative Tenures

Shares of capital-market-linked companies BSE Ltd. and Angel One faced selling pressure on Thursday, declining by as much as 6%, following remarks by Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey on the need to extend the tenure of equity derivatives contracts. This proposal could reshape trading dynamics in one of the world’s most active derivatives markets.

On the NSE, BSE Ltd. shares dropped up to 5.6% to Rs 2,381.10, while Angel One shares fell 4.6% to Rs 2,597.

Addressing the FICCI Annual Capital Market Conference in Mumbai, Pandey stated, “There is a need to increase the tenure of equity derivatives.” He added that Sebi plans to release a consultation paper to discuss extending the maturities of these contracts.

Pandey highlighted that a surge in derivatives trading, primarily driven by retail investors, has prompted Sebi to implement measures such as limiting the number of contract expiries and increasing lot sizes to raise trading costs.

Market Risks in Focus

India contributes nearly 60% of global equity derivatives volumes, but retail traders have incurred significant losses. According to a Sebi study, retail investors lost Rs 52,400 crore in the year ending March 31, 2024, while proprietary traders earned gross profits of Rs 33,000 crore, and foreign investors gained Rs 28,000 crore.

Sebi has recently introduced stricter regulations, including a cap on end-of-day exposure in options portfolios at Rs 1,500 crore. Additionally, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that the regulator is considering further restrictions on intraday index derivatives trading to mitigate systemic risks.

Pandey also mentioned that Sebi will collaborate with the corporate affairs ministry and stock exchanges to develop a regulated platform for information on pre-IPO firms.

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Attacked

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Hospitalized Following Alleged Assault During Jan Sunwai

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Attacked by
गुजरात के राजकोट निवासी 41 वर्षीय राजेश सकरिया

NEW DELHI – The national capital was plunged into a severe political crisis on Wednesday after Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was allegedly assaulted during a public hearing, or 'Jan Sunwai', in the Kalkaji area of South Delhi. The incident, which resulted in the Chief Minister being rushed to a private hospital with injuries, has triggered a firestorm of political recriminations, with the ruling AAP leveling charges of a coordinated attack and the BJP vehemently denying any involvement.

The event, intended to be a routine public grievance hearing, descended into chaos around midday when a scuffle broke out near the stage where the Chief Minister was seated. According to eyewitness accounts and preliminary statements from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) officials, an individual or a group of individuals from the crowd breached security and lunged toward CM Gupta.

Conflicting Narratives and a Blame Game

In the immediate aftermath, two starkly contrasting narratives have emerged.

The AAP version, articulated by senior party leaders in frantic press conferences outside the hospital, paints the incident as a "pre-planned and politically motivated assassination attempt" orchestrated by their rivals. They point to the alleged failure of Delhi Police, which falls under the Union Home Ministry controlled by the BJP, as evidence of either deliberate negligence or complicity. "This is not just an attack on Rekha Gupta; it is an attack on democracy itself. The BJP cannot stomach the good work of our government and has resorted to violence," a senior AAP MLA stated.

The BJP has categorically and forcefully rejected these allegations, dismissing them as a "drama" and a "false flag operation" staged by a desperate AAP government to gain sympathy amid rising public discontent. BJP spokespersons alleged that the scuffle may have been between AAP workers themselves or involved an agitated member of the public, and that the party was being unfairly scapegoated. They have demanded a thorough and impartial investigation by a central agency.

Security Lapses Under Scrutiny

Regardless of the motive, the incident has exposed shocking lapses in the security protocol surrounding a sitting Chief Minister. The Special Protection Group (SPG) is only tasked with protecting the Prime Minister and their immediate family, leaving the security of Chief Ministers in the hands of state police and, in Delhi's unique case, the centrally controlled Delhi Police.

This arrangement has long been a point of bitter contention between the AAP government and the Centre. Opposition leaders and security experts have already begun questioning how a potentially hostile individual could get close enough to physically harm the CM during an official, publicly announced event. A high-level inquiry into the security breach is considered inevitable.

Condition of the Chief Minister and Public Reaction

CM Rekha Gupta is currently receiving treatment at Apollo Hospital for injuries reported to include bruises and trauma. Hospital sources have described her condition as "stable but under observation." The visual of a visibly shaken Chief Minister being escorted away by her security detail has dominated news cycles, sending shockwaves through the city's political establishment.

The incident has sharply polarized public opinion. Supporters of the AAP have gathered outside the hospital, expressing anger and solidarity, while political commentators warn of a dangerous escalation in political tensions in the country's capital.

As investigations begin, the incident marks a dark and unprecedented moment in Delhi's political history. The questions it raises about political violence, the politicization of security, and the deteriorating discourse between parties are likely to dominate the national conversation for days to come. The Home Ministry has yet to issue an official statement, as the nation waits for clarity on an event that has left the lines between political rivalry and criminality dangerously blurred.
